The Vet

He likes the difficult cases most
those exhausting hands and brain
those that seem already lost
those indistinguishable from pain.

He surrounds himself with bone and
metal and yet his passion is for life
for furry things with balls to stand
tall on three legs and to thrive.

No humble work but he does it in
good faith. Knows sorrow and knows loss,
knows that the fittest will survive,
yet when he speaks, it is of love:

Companions seeing one another right
Like pilots flaring in the dark of night.
